Humanize Surrogacy.

Language matters when we talk about 3rd Party Conception.

Your surrogate is a woman, mother and, in many cases, a wife or partner. She has her own life, job, goals and dreams. And, at the same time, she's helping you fulfill yours.

Sometimes it's easier to distance yourself from the difficult reality that you could not safely carry your baby, by using language that minimizes your surrogacy experience. This, while never cruel intentioned, is disrespectful to your surrogate and distances you from your feelings.

Humanize Donor Conception.

It shows respect for your donor. Donors are people, each with a unique story and future. They gave you an opportunity to start or expand your family.

He and/or she is one of your child's biological/genetic parents. Imagine how your language may be viewed by your child(ren).

"Using" someone is inherently negative and dehumanizes this experience. Sometimes it's easier to think of or view donor conception without acknowledging the 3rd party. This is something to process early on so you can proceed forward in a healthier, positive light. Processing your feelings about donor conception may help you feel better about your conception journey AND may improve the bond that you have with your children.

A mom via egg donation is a parent and a mother.
An egg donor is a parent and a mother.
A foster mom is a parent and a mother.

I call it like it is.

Society squirms when we call a penis a penis, but that's just what it is. It's not a "wee wee" or a "pee pee." By calling it something else, we are creating shame around a body part. About 50% of the population has them. Babies have them. Men have them. Some trans people have them. They just ARE.

Using clear language is so important when raising your children, whether you tell your daughter to "wash your vulva" (never with soap *wink), or yell "HOLD YOUR PENIS WHEN YOU PEE," or you say, "You have your biological mother's eyes."

WE carry shame around donors. WE call them something else to help US feel better. Children LEARN connotation and shame by the language that we use.

Facts are just that: FACTS. We need to learn to be okay with having conversations around donor conception and our donors, just like we need to learn to undo the shame that our parents taught us about how to talk about our bodies.

Short, simple facts make conversations with your children easier.

So go ahead: Shout testicles, vulva, breasts, clitoris, and MOTHER with wild abandon. You have my permission.
