Pelvic Floor Health: YES, PRE pregnancy!

Apr 15, 2023 | Donor Conception, Referrals

A pelvic floor physical therapist isn’t just for fixing your belly pooch (often a symptom of diastasis recti) after delivering a baby. Rachael Cappuccino, PT, DPT shares symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction that, when addressed in physical therapy, can improve women’s physical discomfort and even their sex life.

Many conditions involving the pelvic floor are common, but not normal. One of these conditions is pain with sex. Hip and low back pain can also be caused by pelvic floor dysfunction.

Pain with sex can be caused by tightness in the pelvic floor muscles. Anxiety can be a contributing factor to tight pelvic floor muscles. When we are anxious, we tend to clench all of our muscles, including the pelvic floor muscles.

Pain with sex can also be caused by hormonal imbalances such as decreased estrogen. This is more commonly seen postpartum, but also can be seen prior to pregnancy.

A pelvic floor physical therapist can teach you how to relax the pelvic floor through breathing exercises, stretches and manual therapy to these muscles.

A pelvic floor physical therapist can also assist with labor and delivery preparation during pregnancy and can provide core and pelvic floor strengthening during postpartum recovery. They can also treat postpartum issues such as urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and diastasis recti.
